Lucy Day Werts

Hi, I’m Lucy Day.

I love books. I love languages. I built welovetranslations.com. Check it out!

I’m American. I lived and worked in Singapore from 2008 to 2022. Now I live and work in Hangzhou, China. The whole site is about me. In some sense, it is me.

We are our stories.

If you take a body apart, you find organs, tissues, and cells—some healthy and some a bit worn or broken, but all made from things that were ingested. If you take a soul apart, you find principles, ideas, and memories—some happy and some a bit sad or angry, but all made from things that were experienced. We are what we eat, yes, but we are also the stories we tell about our lives.

On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.

We construct our identities by choosing which stories to tell about ourselves and how and when to tell them. Those stories never match up, even if they’re all true. There are stories we tell only our families, or only our partners, or only our friends, or only certain friends, or when meeting new people at public events—or at work.

Every story has a purpose, audience, and context.

Resumes are stories that highlight education, work experience, and job-related skills. They always give an incomplete picture of a person, but they are especially awkward for those, like me, who have experience in more than one field. Most people talk of “writing a resume”, but the last time I changed jobs, I wrote three. Each one told a different story.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Theoretically I am or have been a writer, teacher, programmer, editor, and project manager, but labeling myself using a job title always prompts self-doubting questions. Listing the things I do (write, teach, program, edit, and manage projects) feels much more comfortable.

My LinkedIn profile lists the kinds of work that people have paid me to do, whereas this site is mostly about the things I do just because.

Please explore and enjoy.
